Teaching and Studies

The Department of Geography and Regional Studies offers the following programmes for Bachelor and Master degrees:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography (BSc.) – see also FAQs
  • Master’s degree in „Geography and Regional Science: Geographical System Science“ (Msc.) - see also FAQs
  • Teaching certificate in „Geography and Economics“ (Mag. phil. resp. Mag. rer. nat.)

Geography as a field of study combines the social sciences (Human Geography) with the natural sciences (Physical Geography). Geography integrates a wide variety of subject matter. In a broad sense, the study programmes focus on social, political, economic, and ecological processes that shape human-environment relations. In the first semesters the undergraduate programme offers an introduction to the main theories and methods of human as well as physical geography.  Human Geography deals with the different ways in which people, communities, and cultures are mutually incorporated in spatial structures and patterns. The fields of Human Geography include Social Geography, Economic Geography and Urban Geography. In contrast to Human Geography, Physical Geography focusses on the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment. Classical fields of Physical Geography are Geomorphology, Climatology, Hydrology and Biogeography. As a “third pillar”, Geoinformatics is an interface between Geography, Cartography and Information Science. It deals with the acquisition, presentation and dissemination of spatial data.

Because we are only a small department, not all sub-fields of geography can be covered in equal measure. Nevertheless, the department provides a broad and profound undergraduate and graduate programme in Geography.

You can find an overview of our teaching staff and teaching activities under the heading Staff and Visiting Lecturers.

Career opportunities for geographers – Besides the opportunity to work as a school teacher, geographers can find good jobs in the public sector. They are also often employed as business consultants, in tourist management, at engineering or planning offices, as well as in museum education.
